Improving a Weak Cellular Signal
What to do when your trap sits in weak cellular coverage. How the trap picks a network, what weak signal looks like, and the field steps that actually help.
Weak coverage is the most common reason a trap checks in late or drops offline in the field. Most of it is fixable on site.
How the trap connects
The trap connects over 4G LTE using multiple nationwide networks, not just one carrier. It picks whichever network has the best usable signal at your site, and it switches automatically if that network fails.
Its radio is a long-range, low-power type built for remote equipment. It can hold a connection in places where a phone shows no bars. The reverse is also true, so your phone's signal bars are not a reliable guide to the trap's coverage either way.
What weak signal looks like
- Long stretches of blinking green LED, which means the trap is still searching for a network.
- Photos and check-ins arriving late.
- The trap showing offline between check-ins.
- Faster battery drain. The radio works harder in weak signal.

What to do at the trap site
- Check the antenna. Make sure the antenna cap and connections are snug and the antenna points straight up.
- Move the trap a few feet. Even a small move toward open sky can make a big difference. Keep it away from metal roofs, siding, vehicles, and tanks, and out of dips and low spots.
- Raise it. Height helps more than anything else. Getting the trap above nearby brush or clutter often restores a connection.
- Power cycle once. Turn the trap off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on. This makes the cellular module start a fresh network search from scratch.
- Then leave it alone for up to an hour. In weak signal the trap rotates through every available network and retries on its own, and a full search cycle takes time. Repeated power cycling restarts that search from the beginning and makes things worse, not better.
- Still offline after an hour? Contact OcuTrap Support and describe the site: terrain, nearby buildings, how remote it is. Support can review the trap's signal history and tell weak coverage apart from a hardware fault, and can advise on options for sites that are permanently weak.
Power cycle once, then wait. Do not power cycle repeatedly.
Trapping in weak-signal areas
An armed trap does not need continuous signal.
- It stays armed and keeps monitoring while disconnected.
- It checks in about every 20 minutes.
- It reports any capture at its next check-in.
- You can arm, unarm, and open the trap with the buttons on the trap, with no signal at all.
